Defending the Gospel

Scripture Focus:

St Luke 1: 1-4, II Samuel 23: 11-12

Introduction:

This Week, Elder Cornel Green reminded us of the importance of Defending the Gospel.

There comes a time when running is no longer an option; when the only thing left to do is stand your ground.

Shammah, one of David’s mighty men, found himself in a field—an ordinary place, full of lentils. It wasn’t a palace or a battlefield of glory, just a patch of land that seemed small in the grand scheme of things. But when the Philistines came to take what belonged to Israel, everyone else ran—except Shammah.

He stood his ground.

And God met him there.

The Lord brought about a great victory, not because of the size of the field, but because of the faithfulness of the man who refused to yield it.

Every believer has a “field”—a space of responsibility, purpose, and calling. Maybe yours is your family, your integrity, your faith, or your ministry. And sometimes, the enemy will come to reclaim ground you’ve already fought to possess. But God calls you to stand. To defend what He’s entrusted to you, even when others don’t see its value.

In Luke 1, we see another kind of courage—Luke’s decision to stand his ground on the truth. While others distorted the message or doubted the story, Luke carefully investigated and wrote with conviction, saying, “I want you to be certain of the truth.”

Standing your ground isn’t always loud or public—it’s often quiet, consistent faithfulness in the place God assigned you. It’s refusing to let doubt uproot your belief, compromise dilute your values, or fear silence your testimony.

God brings victory to those who stay when everyone else runs.

Let's Get Personal

      • What “field” has God entrusted to you that you’re called to protect or steward right now?
      •
      • Have you been tempted to give up ground in your faith, values, or obedience because the battle feels too hard?
      •
      • Are you standing firm in the truth of what you believe, like Luke, even when the world questions it?
      •
      • How might God be calling you to remain rooted when others are walking away?
      •

Ask God to show you where you’ve been wavering—and invite His strength to help you stand again.

Take The Next Step

    1. Reclaim Your Field.
Identify one area in your life where you’ve been backing away. Decide today to stand firm again.
    2.
    3. Stand in Truth.
Like Luke, ground your confidence in the Word. Let God’s truth steady you when opinions shift.
    4.
    5. Don’t Fight Alone.
Shammah stood, but God fought for him. Stand in obedience, and trust that victory belongs to the Lord.
    6.
    7. Guard Your Peace.
The enemy loves to invade our peace. When anxiety or fear arises, stand on the promises of God until the storm settles.
    8.

Sometimes your greatest victory comes not from how far you move forward—but from how faithfully you stand where God placed you.
